>>But what's to prevent a company like JCP from operating an auction on their own site when people get more used to buying this way and surfing the net? I mean why wouldn't they try to do that to save the fees?<<

IMO absolutely nothing would prevent a company from setting up a similar auction program, other than maybe lack of financial resources to create such a program. However, I think that numerous web sites have found that setting up an efficient web site isn't quite as simple as it would appear.

Some of the well know stores such as The Gap, and Williams and Sonoma have now established web sites where purchases can be made. Having shopped online at several of the various web sites, I've found that there are very few sites who really seem to know how to efficiently handle on line purchases. If an on line experience isn't great...the customer most likely won't return.

Still able to raise fees and keeps the sellers coming back with both buyers and sellers seemingly very happy....
Great biz and they get my award for best use of the net but pricey stock.

I agree with you, that EBAY seems to be a unique web site. I do not own EBAY stock, and I'm probably one of very few people who have never made a purchase from EBAY! <g> I thought that article might interest Glenn since he owns two stores, and has established an on line business with EBAY that has been very successful.
