I have a good argument for going with the overall market and its a REALLY good one: you can't short individual stocks in a retirement account. My retirement account is far larger than the account I use for futures trading and the only way I can trade in the short direction is either to buy puts or trade mutual funds that short indexes ie. Profunds and Rydex. Thats what I do. In a so called "trendless" market I'm up 40% in the last month and a half going both long and short using Profunds. There's no guarantee I'll be able to continue that but so far I'm doing well.
