You are entirely correct, no stock is an island. I do think people can get obsessed with the direction of the market and key on last years favs though.

Last YEARS favs, or last MONTHS favs?
KKD is finally ready to roll over and die and I missed it.
If it gets back to the 50DMA it is a sure-fire short.

The "new" favs will do what EBAY and NVDA are about ready to do now IMHO.... And that is roll over and die.

Then there is the next "new" thing. Unfortunately I can only spot lunacy after it has happened, like HDWR, and RAD (a company that is up about 700% or more that is a strong candidate to go broke). People keep buying anyway.
