& DDR

This is what I think the original of the EE Times report regarding Intel 845 chipset. It does not sound
totally "pro Rambus" but sure it does not sound "anti-Rambus". EE Times is famous of twisting words
around, just look at the title of their report: "Intel content to let Rambus sink or swim, Barrett says".
Did he say that? NO! He said: "The consumer will decide." Also, the title of the original article is:
"Craig Barrett says Intel will keep on introducing Rambus product to let the consumers chose."

----- Here is the translation -------

Craig Barrett says Intel will keep on introducing Rambus product to let the consumers chose.
To clear the concern about the battle of new memory architecture between Rambus & DDR, Intel
CEO Craig Barrett reiterate Intel's support of Rambus. Intel will keep on introducing Rambus related
product (850 Chipset), disclaiming the rumor that Intel is abandoning Rambus. As to which will have
more support from Intel (DDR version of 845 chipset or 850 chipset), he says that will up to the
consumers to decided.
When Intel introduced the new P4 processor, it was closely paired with Rambus RDRAM. But
because of the higher cost of RDRAM at the introduction, Taiwan VIA united many manufactures to
push the DDR266 SDRAM against Intel. So far the cheaper DDR has the temporary lead and that
forced Intel to support DDR with its 845 chipset, Intel formerly denies that it will support DDR when
it introduced the Rambus 850 chipset.
Craig Barrett says in the press interview in Taipei, he has to clear a rumor that Intel is abandoning
Rambus. He says, Intel will keep on introducing RDRAM product and let the consumers to make
their own decision. But he admits that the SDRAM is the cheapest in the U.S.
He also emphasizes that he can not predict the sales of 845 and 850 chipsets, because P4 can be
used in both high end and low end system, it is up to the consumer to chose.
