Tax Notices: The check -- and the taxpayers' bill -- is in the mail
The phrase "the check is in the mail" often is met with due skepticism in this country, as is the phrase "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."

Some of the worst and most skepticism-inducing elements of both those phrases have come into play with the federal government's issuance of letters telling taxpayers when they might receive refund checks from the Internal Revenue Service as part of President Bush's $1.35 trillion tax cut.

First of all, it is an outrage that tens of millions of taxpayer dollars are being spent to send the letters. Most Americans are aware of the pending return of some of their money. Those who are not could simply receive the notice and the check in the same envelope, saving the extra expense.

And if that wasn't wasteful and distasteful enough, the IRS has mucked up the task by sending more than half a million notices to taxpayers informing them they will get the maximum possible tax cut refund check -- when in fact they won't. Now new notices will have to be sent to explain the error in the first notices.

The government has wasted millions of our money to tell us they are returning our money, and they couldn't even handle that boondoggle without wasting more money.
