NEC to Withdraw From DRAM Production, Cut Jobs, Production

Tokyo, July 31 (Bloomberg) -- NEC Corp. will transfer all dynamic random access memory chip operations to Elpida Memory Inc. and withdraw from DRAM production by about 2004, the company said in a faxed release.

NEC will cut more than 600 jobs at its chip plant in Scotland and almost halve monthly production at its U.K. chip plant, according to the release. The company will cut its worldwide workforce by 4,000.
