Pete, <Yet, you also claimed that AMD purchased a cheap chipset from Compaq (DEC), when they did not have a cheap SHV one. ... AMD had to build a brand new chipset from scratch.>

You missed my point. AMD is not pioneering a new market segment here. They are only going after a market segment that Intel has already shown to be profitable and expanding.

This is very different from Intel's first foray into 8-way SMP. Before Intel did that, there was no market for SHV 8-way systems. Intel then released Profusion (with the help of Corollary and Compaq) and pioneered a new market segment.

<Going from 8 way to 16 way SHV for Intel may not be easy, but you have additional problems because you are connecting busses and not single P2P links.>

You seem to think that the only way to do 16-way SMP using buses is by connecting all those buses to a single north bridge (Profusion-style). You might want to think again.
