Replicated databases can be restarted pretty quickly if there is a problem. Contrary to whatever hyperbolic advertising is out there, in most cases, it really is not the end of the world if an e-commerce site goes blank even for several hours. AMZN and EBAY hae both had their share of blackouts. It's just like a radio station. There are a couple of stations I listen to a lot here - they both have odd dead times on occasion for a minute or more at a time - but I still listen to them. I don't turn the dial and never go back.
