i've just been surfing the conversation, and thought i'd mention how excellent a person you've been in it. It seems to have descended startlingly into unpleasantness introduced by bia and brees, it looks like to me.
so far my take is that there is a lot of good, sensible, humane thought on the subject going on here, and no craziness at all; and the only problem I have is with the word 'decency,' which is a perfectly good word applied to human relations and ethics and kindness and being careful and considerate, and so should be perfectly good used that way in this discussion about sex; but when it's applied to other people's sexual activity, that word gives off the scent not of a judgment about responsibility and kindness but of a disgusted judgment of the sexual act, or particular acts, of others, however deeply the act may be informed by those attributes, or is soberly considered to be by the participants in the act.
Maybe that's not intended. But 'decent' and 'indecent' do have a history. |
