Well, though I don't think I take SI overseriously (Beltane was proof enough of that!) I also have problems with people who use it as a playpen to pretend to be somebody totally other than they are. X did that for a while, and I found it very distasteful. (Though in her case it's getting harder to figure out which is the "real" X and which is the "play" X.)
But the problem is when you mix people who are playing with people who aren't.
Suppose I were to go into a room of black people and shout "up the Ku Klux Klan. Lynch all Niggers." Should I expect them not to get upset because, after all, I was only playing?
If you knew him better, you would admire him very much, Christopher.
Well, as long as he is determined not to be serious here on SI, as I have no plans to go to the Phillipines, I don't see much chance to get to know him better. But what I do know is that he's chosen to dissemble here, not to make it obvious when he is doing so, and to disavow any hurt his words here might cause others.
I can't, frankly, see a lot to admire in that. |
