Taiwan's Cell Phone Retailers Report Banner July Sales August 1, 2001 (TAIPEI) -- Summer vacations have helped boost July sales of Taiwan's mobile phone retailers.
Both Sena International Co., Ltd. and Synnex Technology International Corp. recently reported that their July revenues would be hefty.
Sena estimates that it sold around 187,000 mobile phones in the first two weeks of July, as many as it sold in the whole of June. It estimates its July sales will set a new record.
The company attributes the hefty sales mainly to the thriving sales of Motorola P7689s and Nokia 3310s included in its preferential promotion package. Also, the hot-selling Inventec On-Line Corp.'s i66 phones are another reason behind the banner sales.
Sena sold around 500,000 phones in the second quarter. Based on this amount, the company sold 170,000 to 180,000 handsets a month in the quarter. Although phone prices have slipped in July, the company's July revenue are still likely to cross the NT$1 billion (US$29.41 million) reported in June. Handsome sales may prompt the company to hike its annual forecast on Aug. 10. Compared with 2000, Sena's first-half sales rose 20 percent.
Sena forecasts that domestic demand will top 4.8 million to 5 million handsets this year. It has projected to sell one million to 1.2 million phones by the end of this year.
Sena, Arcoa Communication Co., Ltd., and Aurora Group's telecommunication unit, Taiwan's top three retailers of mobile phones, sold 1.85 million handsets in the first half of this year, almost in line with market expectations.
Synnex tapped revenue of NT$600 million (US$17.64 million at US$1 = NT$34) from mobile phone retail in the first two weeks of July. The company expects July revenue to cross the NT$4 billion (US$117.64 million) mark, thanks to hot-selling mobile phones.
However, both retailers' sales in the second half will not be as good as in the first because Taiwan Cellular Corp., Taiwan's largest private cellular provider, has stopped subsidizing the two retailers, which have been contracted to promote Taiwan Cellular's service.
