In Europe, the average use of the mobile phone is about five minutes a day.

FWIW....I tracked down some of the minutes of use per month for various US carriers.

Verizon 262m
ATT 383m
PCS 480m
Leap 1100m

The first three represent about half of the total US subscriber base....so I assume it is generally representative of the average for US carriers. Leap Wireless has a different model which uses a flat rate local calling plan ($35). They are going after the local loop....

One other comment...in general, the average ARPU of the above carriers has been steady over the last year. The price per minute is falling dramatically but the usage has compensated for the decline.
