Amphus to Introduce Ultra Dense Server Design Based On Intel Low-Voltage Processors

Virgo Platform Based On Low Voltage Processors to Provide Optimal Balance of Density, Power and Performance

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2001-- Amphus Inc. today announced a joint agreement with Intel Corporation to deliver low-power, ultra-dense servers for data center environments. Based on Intel's low-voltage processors, Amphus' Virgo(TM) ultra-dense server platform is a fully manufacturable design that enables OEMs to deliver superlative ultra-dense server products, with fast time-to-market and virtually zero R&D investment. As a part of the agreement, Amphus and Intel will jointly promote the Virgo design to both OEMs and ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers). Amphus will enable its ODM partners to start volume production of Virgo-based products by the fourth quarter of this year.

The rapid growth of the Internet and the resulting proliferation of server infrastructures have caused power consumption and rack space utilization to become significant operational cost components for data centers. Low power, ultra-dense servers have emerged to help address the needs of these crowded, power hungry data centers by consuming less power and rack space than traditional servers.

Ideal for front-end server applications, the Virgo ultra-dense platform offers data centers the highest ``performance per rack,'' as well as unmatched ``performance per watt'' through the use of Amphus' patent-pending Distributed Server Power Management technology (DSPM). This enables service providers, hosting companies, Web site operators and enterprises to reduce their server operating costs by up to 85 percent.

``We evaluated currently available low-power processors for the Virgo platform and, through rigorous testing, we concluded that Intel's low-voltage processors deliver the best balance of performance and power consumption today,'' said Henry Fung, Amphus' chairman and CEO. ``These processors not only meet our power and performance requirements, but also enable our current Virgo solution to offer server-class features, such as ECC memory support, and will allow future versions to offer SMP capability.''

``Intel has years of experience in developing highly reliable and high-performing silicon and server building blocks -- and that expertise is now being applied to ultra-dense server market segments with Intel's low-voltage processors,'' said Tom Garrison, manager of Intel's Enterprise Processor Marketing Group. ``We are pleased that Amphus has selected Intel processors to satisfy the performance and low-power requirements of its ultra-dense Virgo platform.''

About Amphus' Virgo Platform

Designed for mission-critical environments, the Virgo ultra-dense platform integrates up to 16 independent low-power servers (server blades), dual Ethernet switches and dual management servers, all within a 2U (rack units), standard 19-inch-width form factor. It delivers breakthrough server density (up to 336 servers per 42U rack) and dramatically lower power consumption. It also sets the standard for server manageability with Amphus' ManageSite software. ManageSite offers comprehensive capabilities for Deployment Management, Platform Management, Workload Management and Power Management (through DSPM technology), enabling data centers to further reduce operating costs and to increase margins. Virgo server blades are based on low-voltage Intel processors, planned for launch in the fourth quarter of this year.

Intel Processors Deliver Performance and Choice

Intel processors allow true support of the x86 instruction set and do not suffer from some of the performance impacts associated with emulation. The Intel Architecture also provides the IT community with the freedom to choose applications and operating systems without being locked into costly proprietary solutions.
