Yes you're right with regards to Money invested on many stocks that went under.

But Not the money of AMAT Investors who based their Investments on the Faith that AMAT will double their money every 2 to 3 years. I know of a lot of people who haven't heard of P/Es but still get better returns percentage wise than those Fund managers whose objectives are to outperform by 1 to 2 points the return of the SP 500 index.
