I vaguely remember Kevin Kalkhoven complaining about goodwill accounting rules when the acquisitions were being made. Maybe they forsaw this accounting "problem," but didn't let it upset their strategy to build a fiberoptics powerhouse.

On the other hand, I also remember KK saying, "Don't leave the party until the booze is gone," and he eventually left the party (at least JDSU, although not the fiber industry as a whole).
