I am off on another OT tangent - slaves in Louisiana - when I was a history student at Tulane, a professor mentioned in class that the first major slave uprising took place on a Vignes (that's me) family plantation. Like a big dummy, I pretended to know what he was talking about. Ever since have been trying to find it for real, and recently was mesmerized to find that the 1795 uprising (Point Coupee Conspiracy) included Jacobin anti-slavery whites. I need to find out whether my ancestors were the slave owners or the ones who tried to help. I hope the latter - my family has never been rich. The uprisers were crucified, all of them, along the banks of the Mississippi as a warning to others.

That's the names of the nations which were enslaved.
I am telling you this because your own ancestry is as complicated as mine, in a different way. When your forefathers were both enslavers/exploiters and enslaved/exploited, it gives a certain perspective to exploitation.
