Tom, many of the "founding fathers" were Deists, a more "naturalistic" approach to religion. They recognized that if God was truly a "super Dad" with the foilibles and emotions of humans, he couldn't really qualify as "God". Deists approached the concept of "God" as a "sum of all the natural forces." The Church of England, with the King as its head, was a political weapon whose ultimate backing was the implication that going against the Church was going against God. Washington, et al wanted nothing more to do with religiously-tainted politics. We are so much the better for it. Keep separation of religion and government!
