If education means "hands on knowledge" I would prefer children learn it from their peers.

I think most children acquire "hands on knowledge" from themselves not long after puberty. But there are a fair number of things that anybody past puberty ought to know that children cannot acquire from themselves and are not likely to acquire reliably from their peers.
