I think most children acquire "hands on knowledge" from themselves not long after puberty. But there are a fair number of things that anybody past puberty ought to know that children cannot acquire from themselves and are not likely to acquire reliably from their peers.

I have several years of French immersion education. In one week in a French speaking region I learned more French than all my education. You can't teach sex from a book or how to be a caring individual in a regimented class. Perhaps the rudiments of safe sex can be taught, but only perhaps and certainly nothing more.
