The whole area hasn't received as much attention as it should have for and against.

One should also mention that when sufficiently copious, anecdotal evidence does have scientific weight. In this particular case the amount of evidence pointing towards increases in productivity due to IT is so large, that the extraordinary claims of Robert Solow should have required extensive verification before any credence was due to them.

Surprisingly, they were readily embraced by Economists in academia, not to talk about the media who jumped all over the story, yet never published the debunking follow ups of Brynjolfsson, Hitt and Tripplet among others.
