"You gotta be able to boot up and pull up programs quickly, which is why I'm excited about the new speeds of portables." This has little to do with CPU speeds. For example, I have an old 25MHz 386SX laptop that boots blazingly fast into Win3.1. For Win9x bloatware, a fast mobile IDE (5400rpm) with UDMA is much more effective to "pull up programs". Before then most 2.5" drives were PIO and dog-slow in rpm, seek, and media transfer rate. The boot-up time can be reduced to almost ZERO with proper BIOS. - Ali P.S. What is really amazing and important in new high end portables is introduction of 1600x1200 TFT displays. Only very high-end CRT monitors can do this resolution, with inevitable geometry distortions, color misconvergence, and picket-fence effects. New direct-driven notebook displays are free from this problems.
