A very informative research paper from Gartner. Please check this one out:

2H01 Portal Products Magic Quadrant

The portal product market has matured, but is well into the first of two rounds of a shakeout. Our Magic Quadrant evaluates those vendors with the most impact in the market.

Some comments:

The Gartner report seems to include ERP and CRM focused vendors while ignoring the document management companies and many BI companies. Oddly Brio and ASCL are included while Cognos, BOBJ and Sagent are ignored. Application Server vendors are included in the Gartner definition of the EIP market and have strong scores. Due to the number of omissions it is difficult to draw many conclusions from this report; however, some relative positioning information can be extracted.

One surprise for me was the strength of the Sybase offering. Clearly they have a lead over the other DBMS players. Another surprise was iplanet. Clearly Gartner views App Servers as being part of the core EIP market.

I would like to hear opinions on whether an App Server is an important requirement for an EIP implementation or if it is a different market, much like the choice of DMBS. Should app server companies be included in the EIP portfolio?
