Mr S is HIGHLAND in todays PR: ""Highland Valley is located in British Columbia, 60 km south of Kamloops. It operates the third largest copper concentrator in the world and in 2000 milled 50 million tonnes or 136,000 tonnes per day, producing 407 million pounds of copper in concentrate.
The present operation is a combination of the Lornex mine and mill, the Cominco Valley Copper orebody and Highmont mill.
In a historic feat of engineering, the entire Highmont mill and milling equipment were moved 10 km down the mountain and snugged into place adjoining the Lornex mill in 1989.
The move was scheduled to take 18 months, but was accomplished in 14 months using multi-wheeled trailers that were bolted together. Despite slopes as steep as 10%, the job was completed without any major problems. This added an additional 45,000 tonnes per day of capacity to the Highland Valley plant.
The open-pit contains two in-pit crushers feeding a 12,000-tonne per hour conveying system that delivers ore to stockpiles ahead of the mill. As mining progresses, the crushers move deeper into the pit. The crushers are semi-mobile and can be moved without the need for concrete or other additional structures. The conveyor system is monitored from the crushing stations and the mill control centre.
The mill contains five parallel semi-autogenous grinding circuits and has pioneered the development of technology in semi-autogenous grinding. The flotation circuit is conventional. The use of instrumentation and on-stream analyzers minimizes manpower requirements and provides quick response to circuit changes. Concentrates are transported to Vancouver for shipment to overseas markets.
The mine’s major partners are the Teck Cominco group (64%), Billiton and BHP (34%). ""

HIGHLAND VALLEY - COMINCO COPPER MINE
Highland Valley coppe/molybdenum mine is located 75 km southwest of Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. The Valley pit has yielded more than 1,000 Mt of ore in its lifetime. Operations were suspended in May 1999 in response to the low copper price on world commodity markets, and the mine resumed production six months later following agreement between the operators and unions on a new, five-year labour contract, retroactive to 1998.
Highland Valley Copper was created as a partnership between Rio Algom and Cominco in 1986 to combine Bethlehem and Lornex mines. In 1988, Teck Corporation and Highmont Mining Co. added Highmont mine to the partnership. Cominco has a 50% interest, Rio Algom 33.6%, Teck Corp. 13.9% and Highmont 2.5%.
In 1998, we produced 438,676 Mt copper concentrate, 4,598 Mt molybdenum concentrate, 20,093,000 ounces silver and 14,100 ounces of gold.
GEOLOGY
Highland Valley is a low-grade (0.4% Cu) porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit associated with the younger intrusive phases of the Early to Mid-Jurassic, calc-alkaline Guichon Creek batholith.
Current proven and probable ore reserves are 386.7 Mt grading 0.417% copper. Possible reserves add a further 52.8 Mt at 0.427% copper, plus inferred resources of 97.7 Mt at 0.47% copper. Additional reserves proven in the Valley pit have the potential to increase the mine’s life from 2009 to 2012, depending on economic and market conditions.
OPEN-PIT MINING
Mining is by open pit methods at Lornex and Valley pits with 80% of the ore coming from the latter. Three computerised Bucyrus 49R drills prepare blast hole patterns while four P &H 2800 and 3 BE 295 electric shovels load ore into a mixed fleet of Cat 789 and 793C haul trucks. Additional support is provided by three water trucks, eight road graders, eight tracked bulldozers, three rubber-tyred bulldozers and one front-end loader.
The mine uses two semi-mobile in-pit crushers to minimise haul distances. Several kilometres of conveyors carry up to 12 000 t/h of crushed ore to three stockpiles at Highland mill. Pit operations are monitored and controlled by a Modular Mining Systems computerised Dispatch® system designed to maximise mine production. In addition minute-by-minute mapping is achieved by combining GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation and survey with GIS (Geographical Information Systems) mapping techniques.
ORE PROCESSING
The Highland mill was constructed in the late 1980s by combining the original Lornex and Highmont mills. The complete Highmont mill was moved by road 10 km from its former site to a new position adjacent to the Lornex plant.
The crushed ore enters two grinding stages in five parallel grinding lines incorporating two fully-autogenous mills, and three semi-autogenous (SAG) mills grinding a total of 5,400 t/h. The second stage consists of eight ball mills reducing ore to sand-sized particles which feed the flotation circuits. The primary flotation stage extracts copper and molybdenum from the slurry before copper and molybdenum are separated. The molybdenum concentrate is mixed with a leaching brine in sealed, pressurised, heated vessels where residual copper is dissolved, leaving a high-grade molybdenum concentrate. Lastly, the copper and molybdenum concentrates are filtered and dried in gas-fired driers for shipping. Three 1 m-diameter pipelines take the tailings 7 km overland from the mill to the Valley tailings pond.
CONCENTRATE TRANSPORT
Copper concentrate is transported in bulk 40 km to the rail yard at Ashcroft, then by rail to North Vancouver and finally by ship to overseas smelters. The molybdenum concentrate is packaged on site for shipment.
ENVIRONMENT
In 1997, Highland Valley Copper was presented with the 1996 British Columbia Reclamation Citation Award in the Metal Mining category for its outstanding achievement in reclaiming 1,000 ha and planting 700,000 native trees and shrubs. Work to establish fish stocks in different water bodies on the property is continuing to be successful.
