Don't bother looking at Silkroad. The idea is to increase the information density by putting data onto sub-carriers. One could look at this as a finer dividing of the bandwidth spectrum without concession. This is the basic idea behind Silkroad.

SCM is an optical technique of sub-carrier high density packing. The technique enables many different physical layers to interoperate. You just stick any old wave structure into a channel and send it along surfing on a carrier. This is important at the WAN down to the MAN. Below the MAN where the layer 2 factors are more important, MPLS gets the added value call. It accomplishes essentially the same interoperability goal but does so by signal adjunction(headers) rather than signal addition (multiplexing), and can do so because time is not of the essence there.

SCM is reminiscent of SDM since each channel slot is like a spatial division. Most stuff is TDM(tedium) which requires timing. Everyone gets their little time slice in the signal spectrum. You have to wait until the phase comes around to you again so you can load another bit. SCM will interoperate with TDM too. I had asked whether SCM could be geared down and maybe be able to pick-up channel density, i.e., 10 gig = 10 meg per 1000 channels. Should be no problem. Why is this significant or something other than old hat? It's pretty convincing that 10 mbps can be handled on UTP within reasonable distance from the CO. To make that interoperate with FO local loop easily with minimal provisioning suddenly becomes very interesting.
