Tax is supposed to be collected in our state too. But I've only paid it on one item I bought and that one I paid 8% even though our tax rate at the time was 7.75%. Not only that, but our rate was bumped down a half a percent this year and that vendor still charges 8%.

I think they only charged tax for residents of California.

I think we're supposed to pay the tax we didn't pay (honor system) on our state income tax form.

I still get better prices on ebay (even better on ubid for tech stuff) than I could get at Fry's. Fry's has such a following (due to their sale prices and selection) that they nearly put the local Comp USA out of biz. In fact, when we had Egghead, Computer City, etc etc, Comp USA would match competitor's ad prices, but after Fry's came along, they couldn't do it any more. (too many people were going to comp usa just for the loss leader ad stuff so they wouldn't have to wait in line (could be an hour... the place is MASSIVE! I think they have 40 cash registers and sales people have to communicate by cell phone) just to find out they didn't have any more of the things they were looking for). I never saw so many people in comp usa until Fry's ads brought them in and now there are maybe 5 customers in the store at any given time while Fry's parking lot of several hundred cars is totally full. Interesting thing is that while in line to pay, the customers talk to each other and all complain how lousy Fry's is and how they hate to wait in line and heaven forbid they have to return/exchange something, but they still go there for the prices.

So... I have no idea where the merchandise is coming from that gets sold on ebay, but I won't shop retail any more for stuff like computers when I can get it new in a closed package with a warranty at an auction.

That's why I think that ebay will never go away but only get stronger. The company has evolved into a place for quality products. They'll be the ones to underbid Fry's.
