Actually, you are right, answering letters is a legitimate job. What is needed is not nickel and dime stuff, but the evaluation of agencies, bureaus, and departments, and willingness to eliminate, consolidate, and generally prune. We should not have a Department of Labor and a separate Department of Commerce, for example. We do not need a Department of Education or Transportation. All of these things can consolidate their useful functions, or be down- sized to agencies. The federal government legitimately collects statistics, sets some regulations, and administers grants, but there is no need for functions that are duplicative with state activities or best performed in the private sector, like trade initiatives or management research..........
