Nice post, but it was a little bit too optimistic..

"In Canada now you could get one year for that. There are more people in jail per Capita in the US than anywhere else in the world except Red China. Is this necessary? Is it a more peaceful safer society?"

Last I heard we had more people in jail per capita than China. I tries to find a link, but all I could come up with is this:

"While the US accounts for just 5 percent of the global population, 25 percent of the world's prisoners are in American prisons and jails."

wsws.org

To understand why we have so many people in jail follow the bouncing dollar. It was not so long ago that we had the revolving door prison system because there were not enough dollars to go around to house the prisoners. Now we seem to have infinite funds available for housing prisoners. Who is profiting from this and what politicians do they own?

There are many large and powerful public corporations who can only grow revenues if arrests, convictions, and jail time continue to grow. Their shareholders demand growth
and so far the management has been producing. Everybody is happy except for maybe the 2 million Americans behind bars.

The only hope I see for the people in jail is that the U.S. economy crumbles to the point where there is no money left to maintain such a large prison population. In this scenario, hopefully they will be smart about who gets out of jail and who doesn't, but I doubt it.
