"The choices will make will depend on how well we have taught them. Don't kid yourself, though, by the time they are 17 the choice is theirs to make, and there is nothing anybody else can do about it." This is partially true. It is not true that there is nothing to be done. Many children continue to respect the advice and guidence of their parents on substantive issues, life long.

I strongly recommend this tradition. The best advice I ever heard was from an interview in Fox Fire. A teen ager was interviewing an old woman and asked her for advice on how to stay out of trouble. The old woman responded, "When you are considering a decision to act on some impulse imagine your grand mother standing next to you as you decide."

Legally of course an 18 year old is responsible for their own decisions. That doesn't mean advice from elders should be considered unwarranted or without weight. Practically if a five year old wants to rebell against the directives of their parents they will succeed. 17 is a no man's land. Of course a head strong youth intent on a goal is likely to succeed at accomplishing it whether is it wise or not. Sanctioning any choice that a seventeen year old is considering is quite another matter. What is up with this?
