Paris, August 2, 2001 - Alcatel's Litespan 1540 Multiservice Access Node has won type approval from China's Ministry of Information Industry, which paves the way for its wide adoption by telecom operators in China.
The Alcatel Litespan 1540 integrated platform allows telecom operators to provide their customers one single point of access for voice, data and high-speed Internet services on the existing copper wire network, supporting thus a variety of services over the last mile to the end user. Used for all kinds of access lines from POTS to ISDN and xDSL, the Alcatel Litespan 1540 can deliver both narrowband and broadband services, and support different transport technologies such as SDH or PDH, ATM or IP on the backbone side. This modular and future-proof platform also enables operators to introduce, as needed, new features, voice-over DSL, voice-over IP, and SHDSL to meet customers' evolving needs and to protect operators' investment.
Dominique de Boisseson, Chairman and CEO of Alcatel China, said: "The Alcatel Litespan 1540 is future-proof as it can serve as an access gateway for the seamless evolution to Next Generation Networks. Its integrated solution is what operators are looking for all over the world. This government approval will help us serve more customers in the China market."
Litespan 1540 has already been installed in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian, Liaoning and Hubei provinces.
Alcatel's Litespan has a worldwide footprint of 45 million lines, with a 43% market share in the North American DLC market. This market share is currently more than double that of its nearest competitor.
