Noblesse Oblige is way too European for my taste. However, if consensus thinking and in this instance the average joe taxpayer, believes his tax dollars are well spent by giving openly with no conditions or qualifications then I say give to you're blue in the face. State inspired altruism is not Noblesse Oblige. It does not even represent consensus altruism. It's substituting State opinion for my opinion at the point of a gun and at my expense. "Bush can't just get away with saying, 'Well, the American people elected me, and they don't like Kyoto, so tough,' and that settles the matter. Because you're so dominant, you have to be the example-setter." It perfectly settles the matter in a Republic under a charter which begins "We The People". Thank God no one ever changed that sacred document to remove that part which talks about the right to bear arms. If Gore would have got in I think it would have been within the framework of the Constitution for the people to rise up and use force. I think if anyone even attempts to meddle with that document the people should rise up and use force. Actually it's quite obvious, it will and should be done, and that is what that amendment was put there for.
