German consumer PC market in deep depression

See welt.de (in German)

In the second quarter, the market leader in Germany, Fujitsu Siemens, sold 20.5% less PCs than in the same period of last year. The main reason is that the consumer business broke down with a 50% (!) reduction. The sale of Compaq PCs went down even 35.8% (!). Only Dell and Hawlett Packard had a substantial growth (22.9 and 7.8% respectively).

According to the analyst Thomas Reuner, a moderate growth in the business market could not compensate for the dramatic decline in the consumer market. For the rest of the year, that analyst does not see any improvement regarding the Christmas season. "The negative trend is likely to continue in the next future." There is hope only for PC sales to big corporations.

Hmmm, AMD desperately needs to break into the corporate market in Germany. There is no logical reason any more why AMD should not be offered in business PC lines. The platform is tested and stable, the price/value excellent and the performance clearly better then any PIII or Celeron PCs and at least competitive with the forthcoming P4+i845 combos.

I think that in Germany the willingness of corporate buyers is growing to buy Athlon based business PCs. At least, public institutions often do not explicitly demand "Intel processors" any more. But as long as PC vendors are lazy to offer Athlon business PCs the present situation will not change.
