Here's a hero. Web aids 57-year bid to fulfill wartime promise MARYSVILLE -- After 57 years, a World War II veteran this week fulfilled his promise made to an Army buddy on the eve of battle. Wearing his American Legion coat, 79-year-old Harold Higgins rode to the Yuba County Veterans Memorial to deliver four photographs to 88-year-old Grace Jennings, the sister of his Army buddy who died under German artillery fire in 1944. Higgins had traveled 1,900 miles by car and train from Illinois to meet her. "Mission accomplished," he said. "Mission accomplished." On April 14, 1944, as fighting intensified in Anzio beach, Italy, 23-year-old Mack McClain of Marysville asked Higgins to deliver an envelope with four photographs if he didn't survive the war. McClain died that night in battle. The photographs included one of Higgins, two other friends, and the last known photograph of McClain. Higgins had traveled to Marysville in the 1950s to look for Grace Jennings, but it was through his daughter's search on the Internet that he finally found her.
