If Microsoft goes from 10,000 NT SERVER (the emphasis on server) units sold to 20,000 NT SERVER units sold in a quater, that is an increase of 100% in relative units (10,000 servers). The relative number looks great but the absolute number of NT SERVER units versus the absolute number of Novell servers is a very important qualifier when looking at growth statistics.

If I started working out and did two push ups last week, then did 4 this week, my growth rate is 100%. I can now walk around and tell everyone that in one week I increased the number of push-ups I can do by 100%!!!!! (And that's assuming I told the truth when I said I did FOUR push-ups)
