In fact, right here on SI there were a number of short-sellers who were on excessive margin and not only lost everything, but had to sell their houses to pay back margin calls.

That one is kind of hard to imagine. Brokerage houses are pretty adept at protecting their own tails and selling someone out while there is still a nickel or two of equity. I suspect there would have to be additional debt such as credit card funding of the margin position, in the first place, to cause this kind of devastation.

Alas, greed and fear in the biggest gambling casino in the world. Lots of sad stories out there.
