Excellent article. I remember Sir James Goldsmith making this point as he went on his crusade to awaken the American public on this topic. The American public would probably embrace this criticism of the EU if it was explained to them, but American policy makers would laugh at it. It has been our foreign policy time and time again to overthrow democratically elected Communist and Socialist regimes and replace them with slightly (and I do mean slightly) less state-oriented dictatorships.
