Paul, Anyone,
I have a question. Slot 1 is pioneered by the new Pentium II, and my impression is that it is similar in concept to the bus sockets in a standard PC. In other words a technical end user like me could open up the PC, remove my Pentium II and drop in another chip instead. Currently, the only way to upgrade a processor is to use a much more fiddly, risky and limiting technique.
Can anyone tell me what the limitations are of this? Could I buy a 200MHz Pentium II system and later upgrade it to a 300MHz system by buying just the processor and swapping it in, just like a video card? What are the limitations?
I only ask because this would significantly reduce the cost of upgrading a system to the latest processor, without reducing Intel's profit margins. DELL, CPQ, GTW etc might not be too happy, but INTC should do very nicely.
Thoughts?
