I am finally done with the play-- but we have some unexpected developments here at home that will call for a lot of my time and attention for a bit. Quick thought about some of the suggestions- and this is absolutely my personal feelings- speaking for no one else- You and I may have a different approach on this reading. I'm not really that interested in the tough classics- e.g., Danté- unless they are really pertinent to some issue or topic. Random reading I do a lot of on my own. Shakespeare I did enough of as a theatre student. What interested me here was the idea of a topic around which the reading revolved. By reading the books on the original list, I hoped to increase my understanding of how we treat others whom we see as different from ourselves (in literature and perhaps in reality) and also how others see themselves in relationship to "us". So far I've read Foxfire, Girl,Interrupted, M. Butterfly, The Yellow Wallpaper, and of course, the Camus, and I rented Trainspotting the video (hated it). The most edifying has been the Camus because I really enjoyed everyone else's reactions, perhaps the personal thoughts it elicited even more than the intellectual responses. Everything I've read so far has been an easy read. I got all the above at the Grapevine library except Yellow Wallpaper which was in a collection here at home. Invisible Man sounds excellent and I will look for it today as I have to return these others. Yellow Wallpaper is really weird and more like a long short story if anyone wants to just read something quickly. I guess I had sort of thought that as we read a few, we would start examining them relative to the general theme of other. Anyway-- must run-- that brain book sounds very interesting. WHen we were at orientation last month at USC a neuro prof spoke to us about the brain and it was incredible. All the parents wanted to quit work and go back to school.
