[Industry Standard] Interview with Richard Li: COCKTAIL Q&A
[no date]

Who is the most powerful public person in the Internet industry today?
The individual. What’s unfolding on the Internet today is a reflection of what the individual wants and that’s being determined click by click. There’s no omnipotent Internet figure, no single-most-successful business model and no other medium that is such an equalizer and empowerer of people.

What do you wish you had invented?
I’m a pilot. I also find that I increasingly need to be two places or more at once, so a time travel machine would be a good invention. That would rank up there with the Internet among the most amazing breakthroughs ever

What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
I hope to be counted among those that are leading by example in the Internet age to show Asia the fresh potential that new technologies bring us all – personally and professionally. From satellite television to broadband networks to 3G, I want to see that this region experiences the best of technology. Asia Pacific’s entrepreneurial spirit and quick adoption of technology – put on Internet time – will ultimately lead to what I believe will become known as the Pacific century.

Who's your hero?
I have always admired Mr. Akio Morita, co-founder, CEO and chairman of Sony, who died in October 1999. I knew him even before I started STAR TV. He built a company with a sustainable management and with goods and services that make people feel happier than if they didn't have them. I would be a happy man if I could retire having built my company into something that is still growing and pushing forward – creating value for shareholders and also bringing happiness to the people paying money to use the goods and services.
