Hong Kong's Baptist University is installing what its suppliers are calling Hong Kong's largest Internet protocol (IP) telephony system.

The publicly funded Baptist University has a student population of 4,800.

By the end of this year, when the IP telephony system is fully completed, the university's basic telephony system will be replaced with an Internet-based system.

Staff and students will use more than 2,000 new IP phones plugged directly into the university's local area network to transmit voice and video over the system, with visual contact planned in the future.

Pacific Century CyberWorks, which includes Hongkong Telecom, is implementing the system using Cisco Systems [NASDAQ:CSCO] phones and software.

Hong Kong Baptist University is online at hkbu.edu.hk .
