What I don't understand about the article is why the researcher didn't simply evaluate Zicam --- every "variation" away from Zicam (like spray vs. gel, and sulfate vs. gluconate) creates more uncertainty than is acceptable to everybody except the "least learned" amongst us. Perhaps one value in the study is that it possibly demonstrates that Zicam might produce novel results: you can't simply throw zinc into the nose (like was done in the study) and get good results. This study is what you might expect to see in the background section of the Zicam patent.
