A lot of stuff was different 3 years ago: Clinton was President, Intel was profitable, the Yankees were a sure thing for the pennant.

The current process uses much thinner silicon and also uses only a 1000A layer of buried oxide. The combination allows for a single lower energy implant as opposed to the 4 higher energy implants of the old process. I would guess thru put has gone up 3x-4x per implanter. I assume AMD will use a similar thin box process for obvious reasons.
