Pacific Century CyberWorks Eyes Australian Market 05/02/00 SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 2000 MAY 2 (NB) -- By John Stackhouse, Computer Daily News. Even if Telstra's initial US$3 billion deal with Hong Kong's Pacific Century CyberWorks falls over, the Hong Kong telco and ISP will keep trying to forge an alliance with the powerful Australian giant.

Pacific Century Chief Executive Alex Arena said in a TV interview at the weekend: "We want to bring our service to Australia. Telstra is an extremely good partner for us."

The deal depends on Pacific Century's multi-billion dollar takeover of Hong Kong's Cable & Wireless HKT, which is on rocky ground after the recent volatility in high-tech markets.

There has also been speculation that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., with Singapore Telecom, might return to the fray with a US$17 billion counter offer for HKT.
