C&W HKT Expands Broadband Service To Taiwan 07/11/00 HONG KONG, CHINA, 2000 JUL 11 (NB) -- By Staff, itdaily. Cable & Wireless HKT (C&W HKT) is expanding its global high-speed ATM communications network to Taiwan through a partnership with Chunghwa Telecom.
The agreement will create an optical broadband platform and integrate multimedia transmission between Hong Kong and Taiwan, C&W HKT said.
C&W HKT launched the service in China last month and said the expansion of its footprint to Taiwan is in line with its effort to cover the entire Greater China region.
Data traffic will exceed voice traffic in Asia in the next two years, said Tom Chan, C&W HKTs director of marketing and products.
The link, using ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) technology, will give customers high-speed access at rates up to 155 megabits per second (Mbps).
C&W HKT, which is being acquired by Pacific Century CyberWorks, now has the most extensive ATM service of any Asian carrier. The network now covers 17 countries, and C&W HKT said it plans to expand the service to Thailand, Denmark, Norway and Sweden in the near future.
Chunghwa Telecom is the leading provider of international telecommunication services in Taiwan.
