Cable & Wireless HKT Gets Go-Ahead For Asia Cables 08/20/00 HONG KONG, CHINA, 2000 AUG 20 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes. Hong Kong's largest telephone company, Cable & Wireless HKT, has been given permission to start constructing fiber optic cables linking Hong Kong to Shanghai in China and Malaysia.
The cable project is one part of HKT's plan to rapidly expand its broadband Internet, ATM and wireless services outside of Hong Kong - with Greater China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia the main focus.
The Hong Kong Government on Friday gave the telecom company permits to land the cables in Hong Kong off Lantau Island and begin laying two submarine cables.
The fiber optic submarine cables will provide telecommunication facilities and services to the Asia-Pacific region by connecting Hong Kong with Kuantan on the east coast of Malaysia and Chongming for Shanghai, China.
Work will start in November of this year and last for several months.
Cable & Wireless HKT is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Asian Internet giant Pacific Century CyberWorks.
