Sun Microsystems profited from the dot-com boom in 2000 with sales of its high-end Unix servers. However, the company was hit hardest among the top five server vendors in the second quarter this year, seeing its unit sales decline by 15 percent from a year ago, Dataquest said.

"IBM's recent aggressive attacks on HP and Sun customers began to bear fruit for the company, while HP's continuing channel conflicts may have helped IBM's attacks become more successful," Jeffrey Hewitt, principal analyst for Dataquest's worldwide server program, said in the statement. "Sun's UltraSPARC III issues and current poor reputation for service and support hastened its decline and this shows that its incredible momentum from 2000 has dissolved for now."

As I've said previously, look for IBM to really step up the pressure this fall as Power4 debuts. Sun's high margin days are over....permenantly.
