CyberWorks Japan Broadband Venture Takes Shape 08/22/00 TOKYO, JAPAN, 2000 AUG 22 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes. A unit of Japan's Sony Corp. will join with Hong Kong-based Internet giant Pacific Century CyberWorks to build a production studio that will eventually create integrated television and Web-based content.

The programming will run on NOW (Network of the World) Japan in a year's time. NOW is a converged TV-Web service that CyberWorks is rolling out in Asia, with plans for Europe and the US.

The Japan operations were announced earlier this month.

CyberWorks plans to pump some $250 million into listed Japanese video game software producer Jaleco Ltd. If the takeover is successful, Jaleco will rename the Sega and PlayStation software development company Pacific Century CyberWorks Japan, and expand its business into broadband Internet content.

Today, CyberWorks announced the deal with Sony PCL Inc. - a Sony unit that suppliers technical services to film, TV and electronic publishing industries. The two companies will build, recruit staff for, and fit out a $40 million content production studio in Tokyo.

CyberWorks already has a London studio, and is planning similar facilities in New York and Greater China.

Content will include TV programming, and streaming video linked to Web content where users can drill down to find more detail, video clips, graphics, animation, text and Web links. Japanese content will also be adapted for other markets at the Tokyo studio.

CyberWorks has also recruited a number of partners to its Japan venture, including Japan's giant advertising agency Dentsu, financial services company Orix, and entertainment ticketing and lifestyle publisher PIA.
