CyberWorks Takes The Weather With It 08/27/00 TOKYO, JAPAN, 2000 AUG 27 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes. Asian Internet and telecom giant Pacific Century CyberWorks [NYSE:PCW] is to buy a big slice of a Japan-based global weather information service as it builds content for its planned integared Web and TV broadband service.

The company's Japanese subsidiary will spend $5.2 million on Weathernews Inc., which has over 5,000 TV, radio and Internet (including Yahoo weather) customers for its content.

The strategic holding will expand the partnership between the two companies, especially on CyberWorks' Network of the World (NOW) converged TV-Web service. TV weather channels will integrate with interactive Web weather content on NOW and the service will widen to include programming on volcanic activity, earthquakes, and environmental coverage and analysis.

NOW is due to roll out in Hong Kong this year, and in Japan the service is scheduled to debut in 2001 in concert with a growing list of Japanese high-tech and advertising partners.

CyberWorks partners include Japan's giant advertising agency Dentsu, a unit of Japan's Sony Corp., financial services company Orix, and entertainment ticketing and lifestyle publisher PIA.
