True to its name Pacific Century CyberWorks' Network of the World (NOW) has global ambitions, but today the convergent Web and interactive TV service rolled out in the Asian Internet giant's home market of Hong Kong.
NOW debuted on Hong Kong cable TV after making a London initial launch from its productions studios there at the end of June. Studios will mushroom in Hong Kong and Japan, with partnerships in place for services over the next two years in Japan, India, Australia and later in the US.
In Hong Kong, NOW debuted on Hong Kong Cable, a subsidiary of i-Cable Communications Ltd with 480,000 subscribers. It allows viewers to surf the Web for synchronized content while watching the TV. NOW content portals include mp3TV, e-mage, sports, gamer and mother-ship.
"This is just the beginning," said Richard Li, Pacific Century CyberWorks' chairman and chief executive . "NOW is about building relationships with a global audience. We are doing this country by country, step by step."
In Australia, NOW will be available through Telstra's cable and other broadband networks under a wide-ranging alliance formalized with the Australian carrier last week.
