Telstra Completes US Internet Backbone Expansion 08/29/00 SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 2000 AUG 29 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes. Australia's largest telephone and Internet company, Telstra Corp. Ltd [NYSE:TLS], and Cisco Systems Inc. [NASDAQ:CSCO] have completed work on the expansion of Telstra's Internet network in the US.
The Australian carrier is extending its global Internet protocol (IP) -based backbone across the United States into Europe, eventually linking back to Asia and Australia.
The global network will enable the company to provide cross-border connectivity, as well as integrating with Telstra's planned wireless, data center and Internet alliance with Asian Internet company Pacific Century CyberWorks [NYSE:PCW].
Telstra and Cisco have increased the capacity of Telstra's IP network in the US ahead of the Olympic Games and - looking to the longer term - an expected rush of demand for broadband in the Asia-Pacific region.
Recently Telstra announced the four new points of presence (POPs) in Chicago; Washington, DC; New York; and Los Angeles and an expansion of the company's trans-Pacific capacity. The company's developing US high-speed Internet backbone network will place the Australian company in the heart of the world's biggest market for Internet backbone services.
