CyberWorks Starts Content Drive In Japan 08/31/00 HONG KONG, CHINA, 2000 AUG 31 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes. Unnerved by a Murdoch jab at its global aspirations, Asia's largest Internet company Pacific Century CyberWorks [NYSE:PCW] has announced a new content partnership in Japan as it builds up to the launch of its flagship NOW converged Web and TV service there.
Last week the company bought a $5.2 million slice of a Japan-based global weather content company, Weathernews Inc.
This week, the mobile Internet content of Index Corp. is the target. The Japanese entertainment content will be secured through a small strategic investment.
While Index provides dozens of categories of content to most of Japan's mobile carriers, CyberWorks will use the entertainment, cinema, restaurant and travel information on NOW Japan.
NOW allows viewers to surf the Web for synchronized content while watching the TV. NOW content portals include mp3TV, e-mage, sports, gamer and mother-ship. NOW debuted this week on Hong Kong cable TV after making a London initial launch from its productions studios there at the end of June. CyberWorks plans to launch NOW Japan next year.
